Let’s be honest, it’s easy to go through the day without considering the value we’re adding. Do you pause and reflect? How many of us are really giving additional value to everything we do? The difference between just performing and giving extra value can have a huge impact on those around us and even ourselves, but I am not sure that we have that awareness. Are we becoming selfish?

There are three types of people

  1. Underperformers: These are the people who do just enough to get by, often because they are uninspired or simply don’t care about the bigger picture.
  2. Performers: These people do their jobs, fulfill their responsibilities, and hit the required targets. But that’s it. They rarely think about how their actions could positively impact someone else.
  3. Givers: These are the individuals who make it their mission to add something extra. Whether it’s their time, effort, or energy, they give without expecting anything in return. Believe me, I know a lot of givers but unfortunately they are not as visible as underperformers or performers and they don’t want to promote themselves. These people go out of their way to provide additional value – to clients, colleagues, or society.

We often wait for someone else to step up and add that extra bit of value. But if we’re honest with ourselves, how many of us are consistently giving without expecting anything back?

There’s something deeply rewarding about giving without the expectation of receiving. It shifts your focus from “What’s in it for me?” to “How can I support you?”

So, how to give additional value?

  1. Listen deeply: People don’t always need advice. Sometimes, they just need someone to listen. Keep the space for them.
  2. Share knowledge or insights: If you know something that could benefit someone else, share it! You don’t always have to have all the answers, but offering your expertise or even just a fresh perspective can make a huge difference.
  3. Be kind without expecting anything back: Compliment someone, lend a hand without being asked, or take a moment to express appreciation.
  4. Give time and attention: In digital world, time and attention are some of the most valuable gifts we can give. Whether it’s a moment to chat with a colleague or helping a client with a challenge, offering your time shows that you truly care.
