In the business world, we often ask: “Who is a leader?”
But perhaps the more important question is: “Who remains a leader when the title is taken away?”
Titles, roles and status can disappear overnight and then what remains is what’s underneath it all.
Some leaders shine even brighter in those moments. Others fade from the room, even though they’re still physically there.
Many cling to their titles not because they truly lead, but because they don’t know who they are without them.
- Take away the title, and what’s left is someone who doesn’t listen and doesn’t know how to simply be with people.
- That’s not leadership. That’s a symbol of power that only exists on paper.
But then there are others, the ones we recognize not by their email signature, but by their presence. People who:
- Step in and help, even when it’s not “their responsibility.”
- Lead by example, without needing to be addressed by their title.
They don’t need a position to lead. They are leaders with or without it.
Tips & Tricks for Self-Check:
If you want to know whether you’re a leader or just wearing the label, ask yourself:
- How do people respond to me when I have no authority?
- How do I behave when no one is watching and there’s nothing in it for me?
- Can I stay open, supportive and grounded without a title or control?
If people still respect you after you’re no longer “the boss”, you know you’ve done something right. But if you become invisible without the position, maybe it’s time to ask yourself:
Were you building a title or integrity?
