The measure of a leader is not the number of people who serve them, but the number of people they serve.

John C. Maxwell

In business, the word teamwork often gathers images of collaboration and pursuing a common goal. We are all aware that the power of a united team can move mountains. But effective teamwork goes beyond just working together – it is about recognizing and respecting the individuality of each team member.

As a somatic and leadership coach, I’ve witnessed the transformative impact of honouring individuality within a team. Recognizing and celebrating the diverse strengths and perspectives each member brings to the table is essential in all successful teams.

Team members who speak up, offering their insights and perspectives are priceless assets to any high-performing team. Unlike those who just nod in agreement, these individuals bring vitality which leads to more comprehensive decision-making, innovative solutions, and extraordinary outcomes.

Don’t forget that:

  • each team member brings their unique qualities. It’s essential to recognize and appreciate these differences. Celebrating individuality promotes a sense of belonging and motivation within the team.
  • individuals who nod and agree with everything their superiors say may not be the best fit for a high-performing team. A healthy level of constructive disagreement can lead to greater creativity and results.
  • true leaders actively seek input from all team members and encourage open communication. By creating a safe space for contrary opinions, leaders empower their teams to express themselves and contribute their unique perspectives.

As a leader, you set the example. By actively listening to your team, you are showing gratitude for their contributions, and acknowledging their individual strengths. The results of respectful teamwork are increased productivity, higher employee satisfaction, and improved team performance.
