Verbal and non-verbal communication partner together and create a real symphony of connection.

However, sometimes symphony is not possible because we don’t have ideal business environments – every day is different. It happens that while communicating we are not looking people directly in the eyes even though we are following everything what he/she is saying. We can blame lack of time or multitasking for that. In that case, if the person talking to us finds that inappropriate, he/she should address that matter immediately and share it openly and without delay.

Most, if not all of you, are very familiar with this but a reminder is always good. So, let’s explore the balance between what is said and what is expressed without words, and the importance of respecting this.

  • The art of listening – True listening has become a rarity. We’re so focused on formulating our responses that we often forget to fully absorb what others are saying. Verbal communication loses its potency if we fail to listen actively.
  • The interrupted dialogue – Interrupting has become quite usual in many conversations. The urgency to express our thoughts mustn’t be more important than allowing others to finish. Respectful pauses, maintaining eye contact, and acknowledging the speaker’s body language are all part of the unspoken agreement that facilitates a beautiful dialogue.
  • Non-verbal cues – Imagine saying, “I’m fine,” with a smile while your shoulders slump, or stating, “I completely understand,” while avoiding eye contact. Our bodies often reveal more than our words. Let’s allow our body language to echo the truth of our words and emotions.
  • Respect: the glue of communication – At the heart of effective communication lies respect. When we interrupt, dismiss non-verbal cues, or fail to truly listen, we undermine the essence of respectful communication.

Don’t forget – to truly communicate is to listen, to respect, and to align our words with the unspoken language of our bodies. Leaders have the opportunity to lead by example and guide others towards a more profound and authentic connection where words and actions speak together.
