I always seek inspiration in everyday experiences that resonate with life lessons. Here I am sitting atop the iconic Tokyo Skytree, reflecting not just on the breathtaking view before me but on the journey it took to get here. Only when I arrived at my destination did I realize that in my country it is Christmas, the most joyous Christian holiday.

Metaphors around me

The Tokyo Skytree stands tall, a symbol of resilience and determination. It is 634 m high and weighs 41,000 tons and is currently the tallest building in the world that is not intended for housing or long-term residence. What a view this is!

Much like the challenges we encounter in life, reaching its summit is not without obstacles. Firstly, it took me some time to organize myself to get to this place. Once I got here, I faced another challenge at the Skytree’s café – which is also a lesson in persistence and the power of politeness.

Sitting at the café was impossible without a reservation. I asked politely, even offering to stand up immediately after the reserved guests arrived, but everything was without success. Then – a reminder of the importance of navigating challenges with patience. The staff, embodying Japanese hospitality, provided a humble plastic chair, reminding me that despite setbacks, resourcefulness and adaptability lead to results.

This experience is a beautiful metaphor for life’s journey. The road to success is rarely a straight climb; it involves overcoming obstacles, waiting patiently, and embracing unexpected solutions.

As I sit here, the breathtaking panorama unfolds, emphasizing the reward that comes with perseverance. From the highest point, obstacles below appear surmountable, it’s not easy but challenges can be conquered with the right mindset.

Lessons in leadership

In leadership and coaching, the metaphor of the Tokyo Skytree offers valuable insights. Leaders face challenges daily, and success often results from navigating obstacles with grace, determination, and the ability to adapt.

Sitting at the Tokyo Skytree, I am reminded that life’s challenges, like the climb to this remarkable height, are overcome with resilience, patience, and a willingness to adapt. The journey may be demanding, but the rewards are worth every step.

As we face our own ‘Skytrees’ in life, we have to persist, adapt, and enjoy the beautiful views that come with reaching new heights.

In 2024, let’s climb our own Skytrees – one step at a time.
