We often believe that persistence is the key to success whether it’s a project, a business idea or even a relationship. Although persistence is valuable, there’s another skill that’s just as important: knowing when to let go.

We often hear “Never give up. Come on!” The truth is that giving up on something that drains your energy and wastes you time isn’t failure – it’s wisdom. Letting go of something that no longer serves you creates space for new opportunities and more energy for what truly matters.

Here are some signs that it may be time to let go:

  1. You’ve done everything you can, but nothing is changing
  2. You feel drained rather than inspired
  3. You’re staying because of fear of unknown, not passion
  4. You don’t want to be a quitter

If you decide it’s time to leave, here’s how to do it so that it doesn’t feel like a failure:

  • Reflect on what you’ve learned – Every experience teaches us something. Acknowledge the skills, insights and growth you’ve gained.
  • Reframe the story – Instead of thinking, “I failed,” tell yourself, “I made a brave decision to redirect my energy toward something better.”
  • Trust the timing – Sometimes, letting go now doesn’t mean forever. It just means not right now. You can always return later with a fresh perspective.

Letting go isn’t easy, but sometimes it’s necessary. That way we make room for what’s coming – new opportunities, relationships and projects that bring joy. If you’re feeling stuck, ask yourself: Is it time to hold on or to let go? The answer could be the best decision you’ll ever make.
