Climbing to the top is a journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and sometimes solitude. As leaders advance in their careers, they frequently find themselves isolated.

Is this solitude a choice or do people begin to see leaders differently, thinking they are untouchable?

Despite being surrounded by people, leaders often find themselves surrounded by nodding heads rather than true companions. Why is this the case, and what can be done about it?

  • As leaders rise, their roles, responsibilities, and the perceptions of people around them change. Their main qualities —decisiveness, vision, and authority—can create an aura of unapproachability. Subordinates might fear judgment or disapproval. This can transform leaders from approachable mentors to distant figures.
  • Leaders often find themselves surrounded by people who always say “yes”. Therefore, leaders miss true feedback and different perspectives crucial for effective decision-making.

Strategies for leaders

Understanding the reasons behind this isolation is the first step. The next is exploring strategies to overcome it. Let’s be honest, most leaders think they are always right. However, they should take a break from time to time and do a self reflection. Other steps:

  • Encourage open dialogue: Create a culture where open communication is valued. Leaders must foster an environment where team members feel safe to express their opinions, share concerns, and offer different perspectives.
  • Cultivate relationships: Leaders should nurture relationships based on mutual respect and trust and find people who can provide honest feedback and support. They don’t have to be from the same business.
  • Show vulnerability: Sharing challenges can build trust and encourage others to engage more deeply.
  • Hire a coach or mentor: This can assist leaders in dealing with the complexities of their roles and maintain their personal well-being.
