Have you ever paused after a conversation and thought about what really happened?

Maybe you were speaking a lot today. Maybe you were listening a lot. Either way, what did you notice? What did your tone of voice and the tone of voice of others reveal to you?

We often focus on the words we say, but how often do we consider the tone with which we say them? The tone of voice is a powerful tool, carrying emotions and intentions that words alone can’t convey. When we’re stressed, excited or even indifferent, it shows up in our tone at the very beginning.

But it’s not just about listening to our and the words of others—what about our own bodies? Our bodies constantly send signals, and learning to listen can improve not just communication, but the overall well-being.

For example:

  • Tension in your shoulders or neck: Is there something you’re carrying that you need to let go of? Are you stressed or anxious?
  • A tight chest or shallow breathing: What’s causing this feeling? Are you holding back emotions or words that need to be expressed?
  • A sense of lightness or warmth: When do you feel this? What conversation or situation is bringing you joy or comfort?

Listening to your body is about tuning into these signals and understanding what they mean. It’s about recognizing that your body often knows what’s going on before your mind does.

Let’s call this: THE ART OF NOTICING

Next time you find yourself in a conversation—whether you’re speaking or listening—take a moment to notice:

  • What is your tone of voice saying? Is it in line with what you want to say?
  • How is the other person’s tone of voice? What is it telling you that their words aren’t?
  • What signals is your body sending during this interaction? Are you feeling relaxed or is something off?

This practice of noticing, both in yourself and others, can transform your interactions.
