This is the classic job interview question, one I used to know how to answer. But now, everything feels different. In today’s world, even the most experienced professionals find it hard to give a concrete answer.

Why has this question become so difficult to answer both for younger and experienced professionals?

  • Uncertainty

The COVID-19 pandemic was a global wake-up call. It shook lives and careers, showing us how quickly plans can change. Businesses were redirected overnight, industries were reshaped and individuals had to adjust their priorities.

  • Technology’s rapid pace

Digital transformation, automation and the rise of artificial intelligence have changed the work landscape. Jobs that were stable five years ago are now digitalised, and entirely new professions have emerged.

  • Shifting values

Perhaps the most significant change has been in employee priorities. Today, many people value flexibility, growth opportunities and mental well-being. More and more people are asking themselves questions like:

  • Does this job align with my values?
  • Am I learning and growing here?
  • Is this role allowing me to live the life I want?

So, it’s fully ok not to know where you see yourself in 5 years. Just work on yourself.

For experienced professionals, the question takes on a deeper dimension. It’s no longer about where they see themselves in five years but what they leave behind. Leaving a legacy doesn’t mean creating something extraordinary or monumental. It can be about the relationships you’ve nurtured, the knowledge you’ve shared or the positive changes you’ve influenced. If you still haven’t found what you want to leave behind, find time for peace and self-reflection to think carefully. If you do have ideas, do the action steps – the idea itself is not enough.

As a somatic and leadership coach, I see this shift as an opportunity. Instead of getting stuck on what we can’t predict, we can focus on what we can control: our values, choices, and connections.
