You probably remember when we explored the concept of gaslighting and its impact on workplace dynamics. Today, another term is gaining attention – FOMO or the fear of missing out. This fear is based on the idea that someone else is experiencing something more exciting or valuable and you are missing it out. While FOMO is often discussed in the context of social media, it is now becoming increasingly common in the workplace.

For some employees, FOMO manifests as a constant need to know everything and be involved in every conversation or project. They are rarely focused on their own tasks, constantly feeling that they should be somewhere else, doing something more important. As a result, they struggle with productivity and lack clear direction and self-confidence.

This sense of being “all over the place” leads to burnout, stress, poor sleep and anxiety. Somatic coaching can offer a powerful solution. By helping individuals reconnect with their bodies and find balance through somatic practices, somatic coaching addresses not only the mental but also the physical part of FOMO.

There are many tips on how to deal with FOMO in the workplace. Here are some:

  • Practice gratitude: Focus on what you already have and what you’ve achieved, rather than worrying about what you might be missing.
  • Seek support: Consider techniques to help ground yourself through somatic coaching and manage stress.
  • Shift your mindset: Remind yourself that you can’t be everywhere at once, and that’s okay. Focus on the quality of your experiences rather than quantity.
  • Prioritize tasks: Focus on what’s important to you, not what you think you should be doing because others are.
  • Limit distractions: When you eliminate distractions, you can focus fully on tasks, complete them with better quality and faster.
