After decades away from the basketball court, I recently got an invitation to join Montenegrine, a group of incredible women who, like me, have moved into various professions but share love for basketball. Unlike them, I wasn’t a professional athlete, but the idea of lacing up my sneakers again was exciting and a bit nerve-wracking. I knew I was physically up for it but hadn’t played in years. Deciding to join the tournament on the beautiful island of Hvar was tough, but I’m so glad I did.
Basketball is about connection, support, and the powerful energy of teamwork.
During our match, one of our players got hurt and the rest of us jumped in to help, continuing to care for her even after the game ended. This moment reminded me of the essence of coaching. Coach is there for the client offering support and creating a safe space for growth.
Another lesson came from accepting the decisions of the referees because it takes patience to embrace outcomes out of our control. Quitting or feeling guilty should never be options.
During the match, my teammates, knowing I hadn’t played in a while, wanted to protect me from getting hurt. Their care showed me how important it is to assess situations wisely and make beneficial decisions for the whole team. In coaching and basketball, nurturing those we guide is key to success.
Think back to things you loved doing when you were younger and give yourself the chance to bring them back into your life. It offers surprising rewards.
Finally, there is a link between leadership in sports and business. Here are the segments that apply:
- Accept invitations and renew good experiences;
- Coaching in sports and business environments produces the same results;
- Remain calm and focused in challenging situations;
- Learn from defeat and what to do without judgment;
- Always support each other;
- Team must be connected to produce great results;
- Commit to regular trainings to stay in shape;
- Be united but honor each member’s individuality.
- Celebrate other’s successes and acknowledge when they excel.
